• GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when the contents of the stomach travel backwards into the esophagus, which is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. This results in an irritated esophagus and heartburn.

Symptoms: The most common symptoms of GERD are heartburn, feeling nauseous, hiccups, difficulty swallowing, and sore throat.
